Answer:
Is it possible nobody gives you feedback about your "sweet sound"
because they don't want to get into a confrontation of any kind with
you? If your neighbor came over to your house and asked you to remove
those aftermarket pipes and reinstall the factory pipes because they
are bothering him and his family, would you willingly oblige him and
apologize for being disruptive, or tell him to go pound dirt?
(How about the thimble sized thumper inside my chainsaw? Even smaller
than a sport bike or standard, and winding out at 13,000rpm. Likely
offensive to everyone except those who run chainsaws. I'm very careful
when and where and why I run it.)
When the politicians finally drop the hammer, and there are cities
across the nation where they are, it will include all motorcycles, not
just Harleys and clones. You may think twin sport bikes and standards
sound good, but others may not, whether they are OEM equipped or
modified/aftermarket.
Yes, and sound of all kinds is completely subjective when judging
whether it is good or bad. (Doesn't matter if it's loud bike exhaust, a
backfiring Chevy Caprice, or music from a pumped up stereo.) Problem
is, "loud" motorcycles only sound good to a small number of the overall
population, typically (I said typically) other like-minded motorcycle
riders. The vast majority of the general public isn't going to share in
your enthusiasm for loud motorcycles of any ilk. And it doesn't matter
what kind of contraption it is, when it's making loud sounds in front
of my house at 2am on a pleasant summer night, it's a problem. And when
I make it the problem of the politicians, then it becomes the rider's
problem.
Driving any kind of motorized vehicle on the public right of way is a
privilege, not a right. That said, privileges and rights always, and I
mean always come with responsibility, same in every other aspect of
life in this country. If we aren't responsible, if we aren't respectful
of our neighbor's rights by infringing upon them our noise or anything
else deemed burdensome, then someone else will see to it that we aren't
bothering our neighbors any longer.
Which do you enjoy more, loud pipes or riding the machine? And anyway,
no matter what anyone says, at highway speeds you are hearing more wind
noise than exhaust sounds (Rider Magazine, March or April 2006). So
unless you really enjoy the sound of it while you are upsetting the
guy/gal/kids/granny/funeral procession/etc next to you at the
stoplight, all that money spent to change the sound is wasted. And
performance increases- please... Darn near every motorcycle on the road
today has many times more power in stock form than is necessary to
exceed the legal speed limits. Like we need 2, 3, or 10 more
horsepower.
It's up to you and me, folks. Let's not ruin it for ourselves. Don't
ruin it for me. Is a loud (subjective) bike worth losing the privilege
to ride any bike?
Steve.
