"Jurgen van den Goorbergh took his first World Supersport victory in
style today at Valencia, the Dutchman leading a Yamaha Italia one-two
as pre-season favourites Ten Kate Honda faltered.
Things had been looking good for Ten Kate as Broc Parkes led pole
sitting team-mate Karl Muggeridge around turn one, ahead of Klaffi
Honda's Sebastien Charpentier and Yamaha Deutschland's Kevin Curtain.
However, Parkes would fall from his CBR600RR on lap two, at turn two -
the Aussie punching the ground with disgust as he slid into retirement
- and while Muggeridge would inherit the lead he kept it for just two
laps before Charpentier moved ahead.
But just seconds later the Frenchman was black flagged for a jump
start, handing the advantage to countryman Fabien Foret, who leapt
from fourth to first on one lap as a result.
The former world champion then held off Curtain and Muggeridge over
the next five laps, by which time his team-mate van den Goorbergh was
more of a worry, having carved his way from eighth at the end of lap
1, to second by lap 11.
Also on the move was 2003 event winner Katsuaki Fujiwara, who put the
new Suzuki GSX-R600 up to third, ahead of Muggeridge, on lap 12, while
up front the two Yamaha Italia riders fought for victory. Foret would
keep control until lap 18 when VDG grabbed the lead. Jurgen would then
edge further away with each lap to take a 4.898secs advantage by the
flag.
Behind the two R6 riders, Fujiwara kept his third position right to
the flag, despite late race pressure by Ducati's Lorenzo Lanzi, who
took fourth ahead of Fujiwara's Astare team-mates Chambon and
Iannuzzo. Meanwhile, Muggeridge would fade from his first on lap four
to eighth at the finish, leaving seventh placed Werner Daemen as top
Honda. "
