Men uha-uha hvor serien er papirtynd i år,ingen Honda,ingen Kawa,ingen
Yamaha,ingen Edwards,ingen Bayliss,ingen Haga,ingenting faktisk
)
"Foggy: Future looks bleak
The departure of a host of top riders and manufacturers has left the
world superbike championship facing the most difficult season in its
16-year history when it starts this weekend in Valencia. "It's
probably one of the worst seasons for manufacturers in its history,"
said Carl Forgarty.
World champion Colin Edwards and 2001 champion Troy Bayliss, who
fought out a thrilling duel for the title last year, have both
defected to the rival MotoGP championship along with Noriyuki Haga,
who was fourth last season.
The championship has shrunk from 13 to 12 rounds with only Ducati, who
have won 11 of the 15 manufacturers' titles, running a factory team
for the 2003 season.
Carl Fogarty, who won four world titles, is realistic about the health
of the championship.
"I'd be lying if I said it was perfectly healthy when it's lost its
four biggest names in the last year in Haga, Bayliss, Edwards and
(Ben) Bostrom and another manufacturer in Honda," he told Reuters.
"It's probably one of the worst seasons for manufacturers in the
history of the championships. Now we'll see what happens in 2004 and I
think it could come back up again."
The demise of world superbikes has been caused in large part by the
decision by the rival grand prix championship to do away with the old
500cc limit on their top category before the start of last season.
"It's a bit sad I think," Fogarty added. "It's just unfortunate and I
think it was going to happen when you get another championship with
almost the same rules.
"I said the manufacturers will decide which (championship) will be the
biggest one and the balance is now with MotoGP," he continued. "But I
think superbikes could come back next year. If Honda don't come back
next year with a 1000cc and Kawasaki and Suzuki with theirs, then it
doesn't look good. I think they will but if they don't then it's not
good for the championship."
