ASRock K7S8X og AGP
Fra : Jesper G. Poulsen

Dato : 03-08-04 23:14

Greetings!

AGP.

bundkort.

My problem
***********
Have a K7S8XE & an AIW 9800 SE.
If the AGP port is set to x8, my computer freezes during games or tv session
: the display goes out and the PC is out of run unless I reboot.
If the AGP port is set to x4, my computer runs like a charm...

My tries
********
I disabled Fastwrite : no effect
I played with the PCI latency : no effect
I played with the memory settings : no effect

My solution
***********
I have un-installed my Sound Blaster Live ! 5.1 and used the integrated
sound chip instead.
Now I can use the AGP port in x8 with fastwrite enabled and without any
problems...

Hope that can help someone
Now I can set my AGP

Have you tried to move the soundcard to another pci slot?

Hi,

I have seen this problem and in my experience the is only one solution : use
4X.

In my tests I can run also 8X without any cards but as soon as I put
firewire & pci modem in 3DMark2001 demo resets (sometimes after 10 hours
sometimes 2 hours). I have a theory that the extra load on pci signals with
extra acrds produce instability in extreme conditions (I use perfomance
bios)

You found out this your self.

You lose practically nothing in speed if you use 4X vs. 8X

But if you need to use PCI sound card, try slot 2. Ie the second from the
agp.

At least in E+ this slot shares IRQ with onboard sound which in this case is
disabled.

My Sb Live! didn't workin slot5, but in all other's it's ok.

Now it's in slot2 because as Markku said, it doesn't share any IRQ.

Actually Bluetooth told that to us somewhere, but here is what I tested
today :

K7S8XE+

PCI SLOTS and corresponding board devices

(slot 1=next to agp)

slot 1 --> AGP disply card
slot 2 --> on board sound
slot 3 --> on board lan (sis900)
slot 4 --> AGP display card (again)
slot 5 --> on board SATA (SIS180)

So as already mentioned

if you use pci soundcard it is best to use slot 2 and disable onboard sound

If you use pci lan (1GB or wireless) it is best to use slot 3 and disable on
board lan

if you use pci modem it would be logically best to use slot 3 but disabling
on board lan is not probably necessary. This is of course dependent on how
well drivers share the irq

if you use PATA ide slot 5 is free to use especially if you disable on board
sata

slots 1&4 are not good if you have a powerful vga card and use it heavily
(games probably)

Hope this helps, it surely opened my eyes where to put extra cards.

Also I hope that I got it right. I think this applies to K7S8X & E also
(excluding SATA of course)

I have that very problem with my K7S8XE Revision 3.0 and my ATI Radeon 9800
128mb. Unlike you, I use onboard sound and I have a USB 2.0 PCI card in slot
5. The only thing that stopped the freezing for me was setting the AGP to 4X

Destineal,

With K7S8XE it seems that you must use 4X. We tested this with multiple
boards & multiple Radeon 9800SE AIWs.

But it is no big deal. I am suprised if there is more than 1% perfomance
difference in any game between 8X or 4X.

At least 3DMark2001 / 2003 can't show any differences.

I can find out if the same thing happens with my K7S8X-E+ and hardmodded
9800SE AIW (Which should be identical to a 9800pro AIW? The part number
sticker on it even says pro )

Some kt600 boards also have problems enabling AGP8x.
Bad implementation by chipset or mobo manufacturers perhaps?

My K7S8X had a minefield of prob's when I bought it. No matter what I did it
would reboot at will.

I'd recommend downloading Fanspeed & check your CPU temp. If it's above 50
Deg C I'd get a big fat COPPER Heatsink & an Aero7 fan or similar.

ALL my prob's were down to heat. After I fitted the above cooler ALL my
prob's disappeared.

It runs at about 45/47 Deg' C now under full load & NEVER crashes/reboots or
freezes.

Fanspeed costs nothing so it's worth checking.

Hope this helps

I have the same problem.
I have k7s8x-e r3 bios 1.80, ati radeon 9800 pro BBA. I already tried
everything. If I put 8x and try play a game, crash!!! then I put 4x and
perfect!!

I think this mb can´t supply the necessary power for agp 1.5v, maybe if this
can be changed to 1,6 or 1,7v.... would solve the problem.

I don´t tried others bios yet.

Any Sugestions?

Så er det jo mystisk at det ikke virker med mit GF4 Ti4200, AGPx8.
