Engelsk artikel om thai-rejser: Double Sta~
Fra : Robert Kronberg

Dato : 12-11-02 05:47

Hej,

Denne er fra hentet fra Pannakayas forside, så den er på engelsk, men
artiklen, som bygger på en anden fra Internettet, har et interessant
perspektiv, hvis man er nærvøs for at rejse til Thailand.

Double Standard: No travel alerts after 9/11

Straits Times wrote: 'Double Standard: No travel alerts after 9/11,
but there are after Bali incident. [...] After the Bali bombing last
month, when the Bush administration was considering a travel warning
affecting not just Indonesia but much of Southeast Asia as well, at
least three American ambassadors in the region objected, arguing that
there was not much risk of terrorism in these countries.'

After the 911 attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, no
European government advised its citizens not to travel to USA. And
several of the Sept 11 hijackers lived and plotted in Hamburg but
there was no travel warning against Germany.

The Thai politics says that the decisions are made in the capitals,
not in the field, often over the objections of those on the spot. And
this troubles many ambassadors, who fear that the warnings play into
the hands of the terrorists.

The Muslim al-Qaeda does have a network in Southeast Asia. A veteran
European ambassador in the Southeast Asia said, however, that there
are cells in USA, there are cells in Europe, and there are cells in
Southeast Asia. But the travel warning was only for the Southeast
Asian countries.

Nå-------------
Tourists flock to Phuket despite warnings
The Thai holiday island of Phuket, which has been singled out by the Foreign
Office as an area of special risk after the Bali bombing, was almost fully
booked last night as preparations began for a month-long festival. A British
Embassy spokesman in Bangkok said that there was little that could be done
as British tourists flocked to the island's Patong beach for the start of
the season. "We are not telling tourists not to come to Thailand as we are
saying in the case of Iraq," the spokesman said. "We are reminding all
British citizens to look at our advice closely. Phuket has been identified
as an area of specific concern but we are unable to comment further on the
nature or source of the warning. Colonel Apirak Hongthong, the chief
immigration police officer, has taken on the semblance of the Mayor of Amity
island in the film Jaws, commenting: "Phuket is the safest holiday island in
the world." British Embassy officials are hoping his confidence is justified
but are continuing to remind travellers to keep out of large restaurants,
discos and places with large gatherings. Security has been stepped up on the
island. Tourists, hoteliers and local people have been told to report
suspicious packages and car hire firms have been told to scutinise clients.
In Phuket town today a main street was cleared when police were called to
attend a suspicious package. The package turned out to contain three toads.
Roadblocks were also set up on some of the islands major road, while local
police have requested the presence of an anti-bomb squad from Bangkok.
However, there were no plans to cancel a month-long festival at Patong
beach, due to start on Friday in an one of the areas of most concern. The
"Phuket, the Paradise Island" festival will include parades, rock concerts,
cookery demonstrations every evening until midnight. The festival will
culminate in the presentation of a lobster carved out of ice and weighing 28
tons. There was little indication that tourists already in Phuket were
cancelling their holidays.
Best regards Steen
