Dane Names? BRAM & SKREDDER and others
Fra : Roger Jensen

Dato : 03-09-02 19:31

In researching records of the Latter Day Saints I see often where curious
surnames are used that do not follow the traditional naming methods. For
instance, recently I have found Jens Larsen "SKREDDER" and Lars Hansen
"BRAM".

What or why are the names SKREDDER and BRAM used? I have also recently came
across STEEN as a ladies surname. These obscure names seem to have been
added to the proper surname and certainly seem totally out of character for
traditional Danish names????

Regards,

Roger Jensen

It always helps if you know the language - here is first lesson
(there has been a diskussion about other languages than danish here in the
newsgroup)

I'll try to explain
Skredder means Tayler - perhaps he made suits or someone of his forefathers
did.
As Jens Larsen is a bundle the one beeing the skredder (tayler) is
identifiable.

Bram on the other hand is (properbly) some kind of place - used for the same
reason - the Lars Hansen from Bram.

Steen is a not common surname, but is heard before (even though it is a boys
name too)
You could think that there could be a Steen Steen too, but it is not legal
to be named the same af given name and surname, so that won't work.

I hope that is of help

Regards

Peter
