AFP - ISLAND Of ELBA - December 22, 2001 - Jaques Mayol, considered by many
as the grandfather of freediving, was found dead in his home on the Island
of Elba. He was 74 years old. Mayol was found by a close friend, and from
all appearances, he had committed suicide by hanging himself.
Mayol had been suffering from severe depression for a number of years, and
had been seeking treatment for it from specialists.
Mayol, whose semi-autobiographical life story was told in the the cult
movie, The Big Blue, was a man of mystery to many. Famous throughout the
world with the nickname of "Man dolphin", he was born in 1927 in Shangai,
China. He was best known for his continuing exploits as a human guinea-pig
for many researchers in the field of underwater physiology. But his greatest
passion was for the sea. He was the first person to dive on a single breath
to the depth of 60 meters in 1966, to 100 in 1976 and finally to 105 in
1983, where he established his last record, ironically on the Island of
Elba.
