Pak troops seize drone, weapons, arrest 21 militant suspects
K J M VARMA ISLAMABAD, SEP 13 (PTI)
Pakistani security forces seized an unmanned spy plane and a huge cache
of weapons, while arresting 21 people from a suspected al-Qaeda hideout
in Waziristan tribal area in the "biggest ever operation" in the
region, a top Army official said today.

The militants used the Chinese-made drone to spy on security forces in
the mountainous area, where government troops are engaged in operation
against Islamic extremists, Lt Gen Safdar Hussain, who commands
Pakistani forces in North Waziristan, told reporters at Peshawar.

"The terrorists used the remotely-piloted vehicle to check the position
of security forces and attack them," he said, adding the drone was
capable of carrying weapons.

Another senior army officer told reporters that the drone had a modern,
wide-angle camera to take photographs of army positions on the ground.

Hussain said 21 suspects, including foreigners and some prominent
figures, have been arrested during the operation, which started on
September 10. The suspects were arrested yesterday when a raid on a
compound and a religious seminary was conducted near Miranshah in North
Waziristan tribal zone.

The religious school is being run by a former Taliban Minister,
Jalauddin Haqqani, he said. The seminary was "a stronghold for al-Qaeda
and Taliban operations," Hussain said.

The General described the operation as the "biggest-ever" which is
still continuing in North Waziristan.

Troops seized 51 grenades, 29 rockets, bombs, detonators as also
communications equipment being used to exchange messages with militants
in Afghanistan, he said.
