Mac-friendly broadband service?
Fra : Chris Adams

Dato : 21-12-03 02:23

Will the group allow me a query in English?

Can anyone recommend a good internet broadband service provider who is
Mac-friendly, or at least not Mac-hostile?

I have a G3-upgraded StarMax clone with a third-party ethernet PCI card,
running OS 8.6 and 9.1. I'll be sharing the connection with a friend
who has a new 1ghz G4 eMac running Panther.

The Macs are in separate rooms, but are only about 16 metres apart. We
need an unmetered, always-on service.

My friend is attracted by TDC, but my Danish is too crude to evaluate
their (or anyone else's) advertising, and she doesn't speak geek. So we
don't know what to choose - any suggestions?

Cybercity (CC) has been my ISP for the last 2 years. Their service has
been very reliable,- I've only experienced 2 or 3 breakdowns in those 2
years and they've always been able to fix it within a couple of hours.
The supporters are quite competent it seems, and they actually have a
couple of mac-users in the supporter-team.
CC will most likely send out a technician who will, if needed, pull some
cables into your home. All you have to do is to connect the computers to
the router (provided by CC), enter an url mailed to you by CC
("snailmail"), reboot and you'll be up and running. You should consider
buying a switch though,- it's probably somewhere around 300,- kr....

My mac set-up is very similar to what you and your friend have, and so
far it's been running flawlessly with the service provided by CC. I'd
say you should go for CC!...besides,- 395 kr/month for a 1 Mbyte adsl
connection is too bad...

Of course.

Most Danish ISPs are available to Mac users because they offer
ethernet-gateways or USB modems with available Mac drivers.

I know that others recommend CyberCity, but I have very god experiences with
TDC. Their net is very reliable and they have a decent mac support. You can
choose whether you want to do the installation yourself or you want a
technician to do it for you (if you pay him). When the modem is correctly
connected its just to plug the ethernet cable in your mac, and you are
running (with DHCP). You get 2 IP adresses, so all you need is a hub to
share the connection between the 2 macs.

A 512/128 ADSL costs 359 dkk/month and right now the start-up fee is only
145 dkk.

You need to have a TDC phone line in order to get the TDC ADSL.

Well, my choice is also TDC, regarding that they are the owner of the
pipelines.........all other companies are renting space at TDC and are
therefore number two, three or four in the chain of prior......???

And as far as I know, all other providers need to do some cabeling in
your home. It's because TDC owns the cabels. TDC uses existing telephone
lines.

ASDL is technically designed to use existing phone lines, as the data are
transmitted at another frequency than than the phone signal. But because TDC
owns all the phone centrals, they probably don't want the competitors to
have that advantage.

But that also makes it much faster to get a TDC ADSL as far as I know.

Since you will be sharing the connection, you should get a solution with
a router. The router shares the connection, so you don't need to have a
computer turned on when internet access is needed on another computer.
Behind a router, technically, it does not make much of a difference if
the clients are Macs, PCs or whatever.

If you were to connect to the internet using a USB device, you would
need Mac drivers for the device, where as communication with the router
is based on ethernet and TCP/IP.

Some ISPs (TDC) deliver ethernet-based ADLS-modems. They also give you 2
dynamic IP-adresses. In that case, there is no need for at router - although
it's a good idea in order to secure your computers e.g. using NAT.

Thanks everybody, narrowing the choice to TDC/CyberCity helps a lot.

I have never needed to know much about networks, so I am a little
confused about the implications of ADSL modems/routers/switches/hubs. I
need to do some Googling to find out more before I can ask sensible
questions here.

På gensyn!
