After the latest in a long series of fatal bugs, the newest was that
the machine was unable to support more than about 200 simultaneous
reader connections, and when it reached that number, it ran out of
resources and then a lot of things failed to work properly.
This limit was reached with about 50 non-customer reader connections
and less than 200 customers. In comparison, the news.tele.dk machine
has had to handle more than 1300 reader connections.
The machine will be shut down soon, but because of this limit, which
I had been hoping to see with public readership but I never saw more
than about 50 non-customers and 100 customers reading at any time,
access has been closed to non-customers, to free up connections for
paying customers. Further, the number of allowed connections per IP
has been reduced to one connection, otherwise 20 different readers
opening 10 connections each could bring the machine to its knees as
happened with about 60 different readers and 200 connections.
There is also a bug with repeated new connections which contributed
to the machine failure. Ideally the same code that gave readers
problems with Cybercity's new machine when it was returning the
`You are making too many connections per minute' could be used, but
this would require too much code rewriting, so instead a different
rate-limiting code was put into place to try and limit the damage
caused by misconfigured readers that attempt to open too many parallel
connections and repeatedly open new connections.
With these limits in place, the bugs have not been fixed, but it looks
as if the machine can run for twice as long before crashing again.
However, misconfigured newsreaders will have problems connecting and
this has caused problems for other readers. Unfortunately, there is
no simple way to solve the known bugs on this machine which has proven
unable to handle today's news since I declared it inadequate almost a
year ago, and, like this bug which was hidden until last week, there
are probably more hidden bugs, in addition to the known problems of
being unable to recover after a crash, having inadequate capacity to
handle today's full newsfeed, and several others that have required
constant babysitting to keep it running these last three months.
The current replacement for this machine, tnews.inet.tele.dk, is not
open to outside readership, so there is no machine available for use
by non-customers and no plans to provide one. If you visit with a
broom and dustpan, you may be able to take home some parts of the two
old inadequate news machines when they are retired and thrown off the
roof, but I have discovered that I am very out of shape from not having
thrown any machines off the roof for months, and I may have difficulty
giving the machines the needed horizontal momentum required to assure
their landing in the parking lot rather than the soft piles of woodchips
and shrubbery placed around the base of the buildings to reduce the
amount of damage requiring repaving of the parking lot. Our apologies.
