> "I am no longer the messenger of a party, but a trustee of the nation,"
> said Israel's ninth president, shortly after he was sworn in on Sunday
> evening.
>
> "From this moment I will be the voice and the address for every citizen of
> the state of Israel, for every baby and child, for women and men, for the
> poor and the elderly. My home will be open to all - my hands will be
> extended to each and every one," Peres said.
>
> Peres swore allegiance and signed his declaration moments before
> addressing the audience. Knesset Speaker Dalia Itzik shouted out, "Long
> live the president of the state of Israel," to which present Knesset
> members and the remainder of the audience replied, "Long live, long live,
> long live."
>
> The president spoke of the trust the public invested in him, and expressed
> his appreciation to the people for doing so.
>
> Peres accepted the position, saying he would try to bring together the
> country's citizens, who "weave us together as a nation," reminding
> listeners that "it must always be remembered that we are the sons and
> daughters of one Land of Israel. We do not have, and we are not looking
> for, another country."
>
> Peres spoke of Israel's great achievements, noting the Israel Defense
> Forces and its courageous operation in Entebbe. He praised the country's
> victories over the years, during which the Jewish state had "to stand
> alone" on more than one occasion.
>
> "We never despaired. We did not lose a war. And every time we rose up
> again," said the president. "Even Israel's severe critics will not succeed
> in hiding her extraordinary achievements, her peaks, which rise above the
> skyline of history," he added.
>
> The president reflected on the country's fallen and its wounded. "Without
> the self-sacrifice shown by the Israeli Forces, we would not have reached
> this stage," he said.

Om de kidnappede soldater:

> Peres insisted that the release kidnapped soldiers, Gilad Schalit, Ehud
> Goldwasser, Eldad Regev and other captured soldiers was at "the head of
> [Israel's] agenda."

Om Israels hovedstad Jerusalem:

> Other items on the president's agenda included keeping Jerusalem as "the
> spiritual and political center for the Jewish people and a nest of prayer
> for seekers of peace of all believers."

> He also pinpointed the importance of developing the Negev and the Galilee,
> promising that "the day will come when Lebanon will be freed of its
> destroyers and Syria will free it of its ropes."
>
> Lastly, Peres spoke of the significance of pushing forward plans for "the
> Valley of Peace," the president's dream for "a haven of cooperation"
> between Israel, the Hashemite Kingdom and the Palestinians.
>
> Earlier, an honor guard comprising of 72 of the military's and Knesset's
> branches welcomed Peres. The president's car was escorted to the Knesset
> by the traditional entourage of six motorcycles and six horsemen. Soon
> upon arrival to the Knesset compound, Peres laid a wreath on the monument
> for the memorial of Israel's fallen soldiers.

Internationale ledere har ønsket at deltage i indsættelsesceremonien,
men Peres ønskede at det ikke ...

> At Peres's request, international leaders did not attend the ceremony at
> the Knesset. Many world leaders inquired about coming, but Peres decided
> it should remain "an internal Israeli affair."
>
> Peres's wife, Sonia did not attend, because of her heart condition. Former
> president Moshe Katsav did not attend the ceremony either.

> Prior to the ceremony, Peres told the Associated Press that Israel must
> "get rid of the territories," he said, referring to the West Bank,
> insisting that this is the majority view in Israel today.
>
> "I won't make any secrets of my mind. I shall respect the minority. I
> shall not insult them," Peres said. "I changed my position. I didn't
> change my beliefs and concepts."

> Politicians praised the inauguration of President Shimon Peres following
> his induction ceremony on Sunday evening.

> "Shimon Peres will never stop dreaming, nor will he stop implementing his
> dream," opposition leader Binyamin Netanyahu told reporters on Sunday
> evening.
>
> The Likud chairman added that he was "touched" by words spoken by Peres in
> his inauguration speech.
>
> Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni was pleased with the decision to place the
> former prime minister as Israel's No. 1 citizen. "I gave my support for
> Peres when he became a candidate. He has an agenda, and it is good that
> this is so. It's an agenda of peace in the Middle East. I felt joy in my
> heart when he was picked," said Livni.
>
> Shortly after Peres swore allegiance to the Jewish state, Knesset Speaker
> Dalia Itzik showered him with compliments. "You will be a non-stop
> president. The state of Israel thanks you for dreams that were realized in
> stone and concrete. Thank you for your tremendous drive, thank you for
> vision that has turned... into cities," said Itzik, who served as acting
> president since Moshe Katsav's self suspension.

Parlamentsformanden undskylder for tidligere Knesset-medlemmers opførsel
over for Peres:

> Itzik apologized for the behavior of previous Knesset members, saying that
> "throughout the years we have embittered you, you've suffered hard times,
> and we have scorned your dreams, turned our backs on you.
>
> "Today's event is our opportunity to apologize to you, in the name of all
> of us, generations of members of Knesset. This is the time to ask for your
> forgiveness," Itzik added.

repræsenteret i Knesset.

> Not all of the country's citizens were pleased with the inauguration.
> Prior to the ceremony, Jewish Front activists protested in front of the
> Knesset against Peres's swearing-in.
>
> The protesters were carrying signs that said "we shall not forget and we
> shall not forgive," "bring Oslo criminals to justice" and "Peres is worse
> than Katsav."
>
Ja, alle lande har deres ekstremister. Lad os håbe at Shimon Peres

http://www.faqs.org/faqs/usenet/cancel-faq/part1/

Ok, tak for oplysningen.

palæstinensiske fanger i israelske fængsler.

have Europa til at give Hamas økonomisk støtte - uden betingelser.
