> Politicians praised the inauguration of President Shimon Peres following
> his induction ceremony on Sunday evening.
Likud-lederen Netanyahu er rørt af Peres ord, og kalder ham en 'drømmer'
- en mand der drømmer om fred mellem Israel og dets arabiske naboer.
> "Shimon Peres will never stop dreaming, nor will he stop implementing his
> dream," opposition leader Binyamin Netanyahu told reporters on Sunday
> evening.
>
> The Likud chairman added that he was "touched" by words spoken by Peres in
> his inauguration speech.
>
> Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni was pleased with the decision to place the
> former prime minister as Israel's No. 1 citizen. "I gave my support for
> Peres when he became a candidate. He has an agenda, and it is good that
> this is so. It's an agenda of peace in the Middle East. I felt joy in my
> heart when he was picked," said Livni.
>
> Shortly after Peres swore allegiance to the Jewish state, Knesset Speaker
> Dalia Itzik showered him with compliments. "You will be a non-stop
> president. The state of Israel thanks you for dreams that were realized in
> stone and concrete. Thank you for your tremendous drive, thank you for
> vision that has turned... into cities," said Itzik, who served as acting
> president since Moshe Katsav's self suspension.
Parlamentsformanden undskylder for tidligere Knesset-medlemmers opførsel
over for Peres:
> Itzik apologized for the behavior of previous Knesset members, saying that
> "throughout the years we have embittered you, you've suffered hard times,
> and we have scorned your dreams, turned our backs on you.
>
> "Today's event is our opportunity to apologize to you, in the name of all
> of us, generations of members of Knesset. This is the time to ask for your
> forgiveness," Itzik added.
Men tilhængerne af at smide alle arabere vest før Jordanfloden ud, som
medlemmerne af Jødisk Front, accepterer ham stadig ikke; de er dog ikke
repræsenteret i Knesset.
> Not all of the country's citizens were pleased with the inauguration.
> Prior to the ceremony, Jewish Front activists protested in front of the
> Knesset against Peres's swearing-in.
>
> The protesters were carrying signs that said "we shall not forget and we
> shall not forgive," "bring Oslo criminals to justice" and "Peres is worse
> than Katsav."
>
Ja, alle lande har deres ekstremister. Lad os håbe at Shimon Peres
'drømme' kan blive til realiteter. Som præsident vil modtageren af
Nobels Fredspris nok få en noget stærkere position end tidligere
israelske præsidenter; posten er stort set kun ceremoniel og svarer til
vores dronnings ...
