Hi.

Which goose might this be ?

My guess = Graylag goose (Anser anser)

Very poor pictures, but the small movie is a little better..

Thanks

They are Pink-footed Geese Anser brachyrhynchus, juvenile in the first
few pictures, adult in the remainder.

Compare the bill shape and colour of Greylag and Pinkfoot on page 43 of
the Collins Bird Guide and you will see that Greylag has a much larger
bill, coloured all over, while the Pinkfoot has a dark bill with pink
over the top and along the sides.

But.. Pink-footed.. gotta be quite a sensation here ? No reports this
year..

All pictures and movie is 100% the same bird. There was only one bird.

But I have to agree.. the bill WAS really small.. the bird was totally
un-shy.. I could go about 2 meters near..

The photos are bad because it was dark.. so shaking-unstibility
occoured..

It seems to be darker at top of bill too? as the Pink-footed..

Well well, I got to get some more opinion on this one..

If it really IS Pink-footed.. I would be VERY pleased.. I don't "have
"that one.

OK. I've had another look and the variation I thought I saw is in the
photographs not the bird. The first three photos are so dark that some
of the features aren't visible.

Oh it really IS pink-footed. There is absolutely no doubt about that.
The fact that it was so tame suggests that it may not have been
completely fit. I notice that in the last photo the right wing tip is
trailing slightly below the tail feathers instead of being on top like
the left wing. This is sometimes a sign of some injury.

Well, I have to agree. And it was still there today, and now I got GOOD
photos !!

It doesn't look injured, but maybe unable to fly. Today I got as close
as 1 meter..

Those are better pics! The bird is a juvenile, hatched this year. It
might be a Bean Goose rather than a Pinkfoot, which is much more likely
bearing in mind where you live!

Hmm.. so you would say Bean goose now ???

I've had lots of opinions from the local and national ornitologists, and
they ALL say pink-footed..

But.. the leg-color then ?? Bean goose = orange legs ?

This one does NOT have orange legs.

So, I would say Pink-footed..

It's legs are actually quite bright for a juvenile. And not as pure pink
as all that. And Bean Geese can, rarely, have pink legs!

It's the bill I'm looking at mostly. It's got an awful lot of colour on
it for a Pinkfoot and is quite deep at the base, both a bit more like
Bean than Pinkfoot.

But ..the bill is also small?

And, the bird itself was not very big..

Now I am confused... Bean or Pink-footed... :(

But again.. really reliable people says Pink-footed.. but I also have a
lot of trust in your opinion...

Or, should we say that it is impossible to decide betweeen Bean and
Pink-footed ???

Almost certainly Pink-footed, but it is a strange bird in a strange
place and I just said it "might" be Bean to get you thinking

Sometimes.

I believe this bird is a Pinkfoot, but some of its charactistics are not
entirely typical.

Ok, I have really tried to compare to the book.. and I would say Pink-
footed.

Dont'n know if you got my earlier "other opinion".. here it is any way.

And, thanks for your effort Malc !

"Yes, it is a Pink-footed goose.

Shortbilled with pink point of bill and also pink legs (pink/red is a
better description).

On the pictures whitout flash one can see the brighter tail (than Bean
goose) and and the brighter back

(extra obvious silvercolour on some feaders). Back: silver in there.
Neck and head deeper chokolate-brown

than Bean.

The light tips on any feader at back and wings indicates young bird."
