Denmark is demanding Israel explain the arrest of a Danish citizen of
Palestinian descent, Israel Radio reported on Saturday.
Newspapers in Denmark reported that the man was recently arrested by Israeli
authorities on suspicion of having contacts with the Lebanese terror group
Hizbullah.
Efforts are being made to set up a meeting between the detainee and
Denmark's consul-general in Israel.
The Foreign Ministry in Copenhagen confirmed the report, and said the
suspect was remanded until January 19. According to the report, a Danish
diplomat was prevented from taking part in the remand hearing.
In addition, it was reported that Israel's ambassador to Denmark was
summoned to the Danish Foreign Ministry, which demanded of Israel to allow
its representatives to visit the man and ensure he received a fair trial.
According to ministry officials, a defense attorney was appointed to defend
the suspect, but he has yet to meet with his client.
Israeli Foreign Ministry officials said in response that in spite of recent
reports in Denmark, there isn't any tension between Jerusalem and Copenhagen
and certainly not a crisis.
