'The Sound Of Music:'
'While waiting at a concert for a forgotten instrument, Maria von Trapp
entertained the audience by relaying stories about her large and
adventure-prone family. After the concert, a man approached her backstage
saying that she should write a book. When Maria responded that she preferred
telling stories, he offered to write them and her book--The Story of the
Trapp Family Singers--set the stage for The Sound Of Music.
According to Hirsch's book,The Sound of Music-The Making of America's
Favorite Movie, in 1956 Maria was approached by a German film producer who
offered her $10,000 for the rights to her book. Upon advice from her lawyer,
Maria also asked for royalties and a share of the profits. The producer said
he would have to call Germany and ask permission. A few days later he told
Maria about a law that forbids German film companies from paying royalties
to foreigners (Maria was by now an American citizen). Without checking his
story, Maria signed the contract and, at the same time, unknowingly signed
away all the film rights to her story.
Not only had the producer lied to her, but he actually called her a few
weeks later and suggested that if she would agree to take $9,000, he could
give her the entire amount immediately. She needed the cash and made the
deal.
Maria's story, Die Trapp Family, was produced in Germany in 1956 and became
a big hit. It did so well, that a sequel entitled Die Trapp Family in
Amerika was made in 1958. They became the most successful films produced in
Germany since World War II.
In 1956, Paramount Pictures in Hollywood purchased the US film rights to Die
Trapp Family. A Broadway producer saw the film and fell in love with it, but
by the time he went to buy the rights Paramount had dropped its option. The
producer made a deal with the German film producer and voluntarily gave
Maria three-eighths of 1 percent in royalties on the Broadway show. It was
more than Maria expected, and she was very grateful.
According to Hirsch's book, the producer, Richard Halliday and his wife Mary
Martin, who was to play Maria, approached the legendary musical team of
Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II and asked them to write one
original song for Martin to sing in the play. But the composer and writer
thought that their style of music would clash with the authentic Austrian
folk songs. Instead, they offered to write a fresh new score and to act as
co-producers of the show. The rest is history.'
