t.A.t.U - How Soon Is Now
Fra : Robert Eriksen

Dato : 19-06-03 08:15

nogensinde... i al musiks historie... i hele universet... overhovedet.

Are you asking who originally wrote this song? If so.....it's a song by The
Smiths.

I know the original by The Smiths.
I was just wondering if t.A.t.U.s "interpretation" of the song was legal.
It seems like a crime against music what they have done.

Many, many covers seems like a crime against the original song. In the
last couple of years there have been much too many very awful covers.

There's nothing wrong with doing a cover as long as you don't ruin the song,
yes. But one thing I really hate is when a new band releases a cover as
their first single and becomes known because of that. For example Orgy and
Six Pence None the Richer and there's others too. That's not right!

The Rolling Stones did that. It was a very good version. Lots of British
Invasion bands did - (not The Beatles but they had tons of cover
versions on their repertoire). I don't see how it's wrong.

I just think it's a bit unfair getting famous over a song you didn't even
write. Am I the only one? I think a cover should be a b-side not an A-side
and definitely not a first single plus video. :D

I'm just not buying that. See, I appreciate artists doing something
original as much as the next guy (or, in your case, gal). In fact,
that's one of my main criterion for picking out stuff I want to pay good
money to listen to. However, I don't think whether this group or that
group wrote their own songs is the main factor --- it's whether or not
they're doing something really cool with the song (whoever wrote it).

Like, you can't say, oh I don't know, some random jazz musician's
(relative) fame and success is unfair. A lot of the material in jazz are
silly old standards; though there's a lot of original material too,
often people would "just" do variations on a theme (whether improvised
or charted out, that doesn't really matter) and still it can be insanely
interesting and compelling and, you know, it'll just suck you right in.

Same way with Jimi Hendrix' "All Along the Watch Tower." That's a Dylan
song. Hendrix didn't write it but he made it over completely and did
some really cool stuff with (and it's still a good song in its own
right). I really couldn't care less who wrote it.

What bands do you like?

However, I don't think whether this group or that

> they're doing something really cool with the song (whoever wrote it).

Yes, I agree. Somehow though it annoys me when someone releases a song
that's been done before, as their first single. It's quite alright to cover
a song, of course! If T.A.T.U. released How Soon is Now as their first
single and became known because of it, I would think first that it's cool
that T.A.T.U likes The Smiths but why couldn't they release a song they
wrote instead? But they didn't do that so that's good. :) They got famous by
an original song.

Well ok. I'm not into Jazz. I can't quite give much more of an argument, at
the end of the day it's just my opinion. I just think what makes a band
think oh we wrote all of these songs here for our album but lets release the
cover we did of that New Order song first. It was a hit in the 80's we can
make it a hit again. If I was in a band I would want to release some of my
own work first and not someone else's. Wouldn't you think in the same way?
You would think they would be proud of the other songs you know? A band
loses points in my book for doing something like this, I can't help it! :)
Orgy annoyed me the most because I saw them on TV once say how they went
into a record store and picked up Blue Monday, having not heard it or
whatever, they thought it was a dumb song and decided to cover it just as a
joke. During this interview they made fun of New Order. New Order are cool
and thanks to them Orgy had a hit song (at least in America), I don't think
they had another successful hit.

Oh, oh, LOTS. Lately, I've been into British Invation and soul (lots and
lots of covers as first singles in those genres, incidently). I also
like jazz and experimental rock, blues. In short, I like good music.
Some of my all-time favorite artists, though, would be .. Neil Young.
Beach Boys. Mike Watt/Minutemen/fIREHOSE. Warren Zevon (who's dying,
sadly). Johnny Cash. The Zombies. The Pogues. Syd Barrett-era Pink
Floyd. Pre 1985-R.E.M. Sidewinders/Sand Rubies/Rich Hopkins. Giant
Sand/Howe Gelb. Velvet Underground. Dylan. Springsteen. Roxy Music.
Elvis Costello. James Carr. Captain Beefheart. Helmet. Public Enemy.
Kraftwerk.

> I can't quite give much more of an argument, at

Which, of course, is perfectly admirable. Incidently, I take music much,
much too seriously.

> Wouldn't you think in the same way?

Well.. kinda, sorta, maybe. I would prefer that my band (that I'm in for
the sake of argument - I completely and utterly suck at playing the
guitar) released an interesting, inventive version of a song some other
guy wrote, rather than a so-so song I wrote. (Obviously, if it's the
other way round, then I'm completely with you).

I'm afraid I can't really comment on that -- I'm not much into New Order
and I've never even heard of Orgy. But sure, if they're releasing a
cover version without adding anything just to cash in, then you're
right; you shouldn't do that.

No. But it was one of his most famous.

Nope. I believe it was "Hey Joe" (Which was a cover).

Didn't Elvis do that?

Am I the only one?

Nope. But what about heavy sampling of a melody?

Apollo 440: "Ain't Talking About Dub"
Watergate: "Heart Of Asia"

being two older but relevant examples.

Word: Did you hear t.A.T.u.'s version of "How Soon Is Now?"
Morrissey: Yes, it was magnificent. Absolutely. Again, I don't know much

Word: They are teenage Russian lesbians.

Smiths som har lavet originalversionen af "How Soon Is Now?".

stejlede over.

Det her er Usenet.

At sige :

"fatter ikke en brik -- -øhh undskyld er dette ikke >>DK<<.kultur.musik ?
øøhh. get it ? det tror jeg nok du gør !"

havde uden tvivl høstet langt bedre feedback.

Netop.
Word up.

> Det samme kan siges om både

Rigtigt, men chancen for at man har hørt om Morrissey m.m. er større end at
man har hørt om et eller andet blad man kun kan få i større stationskiosker
(eller hvor man nu kan købe det).

> Det skader dog ikke at undersøge noget selv, inden man bralre op.

Det må være dit job som viderefortæller også at formidle kendskab om kilden,
specielt hvis det er en publikation som ikke alle kan forventes at kende
til.

Sorry. Is it a problem that I wrote in English? :( I like so many Danish
bands and this is the only place that discusses them. But I can be silent as
a monk, well I can't guarantee it. :) sorry. Anyways I thought everyone in
Denmark knew English anyways?

Sorry, but no, Dead Kennedys and Love Shop have nothing in common.

And if I used my head, I would have found out that DK in fact was an album
they made, and *not* a harsh remark to write in Danish. I'll be off, then.

Do a Google search for Jack Handy, and start laughing :)

Hmm a hard question. :) I would suggest to get "Go" next only because Jens
from LS told me that most people consider this album their best so far. My
two favorites though are "Billeder Af Verden" and " Det Løse Liv" But
I'm a unique LS fan.

"Det Løse Liv" Should be very non-guitar poppy as far as I have gathered.
Think I'll try "Go" first. I like Hilmers pop-oriented guitarplaying.

Can anybody tell me story about the release "90" vs. "90/91"? What's this
for?

What song do you like the best that is guitar-poppy?

Især vil man bemærke at

I hope that answers your question? :)

Ahemm, what I meant is that I generally tend to enjoy poppy songs with a
guitar more than poppy songs without. You could say it's an "organic"
thing. I meant that Hilmer plays tasteful in the confines of the songs. It
just seems to fit like hand in a glove.

I quite like all the songs on "Anti", but when you get the sounds of the
weaving guitar on "Alle Har En Drøm At Befri", the riffing on "Yugo Star",
the small add-ons on "På Kontorene", "Det Tog Mig Et År", the tasteful
guitar-harmonica-interplay on the wonderful "Du Er Kommet For At Go" it
just adds that extra flavour in the signals up my spine.
But in general the whole album just clicks with something in me. I think
I've found a new favourite band. But I guess I should have known that,
since I love Naïve's "Absolution Music" :D

Thanks and more or less. I wonder if all their albums still are in print
and easily accesible (here in Denmark).

I'll listen carefully next time I listen to some Love Shop cd's to pin point
the more guitar oriented poppy songs.

I think all of their songs have this feel so you should like all of
their albums. The one, in my opinion, as far as "sound" that is most similar
to Anti would be their new one called National. So you might want to check
that one out next.

But I guess I should have known that,
> since I love Naïve's "Absolution Music" :D

The Danish band called Naive? I don't remember them having a song by that
name or any of their songs having a love shop'py feel. :) But I'm not an
expert when it comes to that band. I just heard one album. Can you explain
what you mean by that? What's the connection between LS and Naive?

I wonder if all their albums still are in print
> and easily accesible (here in Denmark).

I have no idea. I'm surprised that no one else in this newsgroup has replied
to you though. But if one were I would guess that it's the 1990 one just
because it was the one album I had a hard time getting sent over to me. But
again I have no clue.

Fogfogfog. Now I have another batch of cd's I desire. No fair.

Yup, the danish band. "Absolution Music" (1995) is an album by them and
Hilmer was a prominent member (guitar, keys, bass, producer) of that group
alongside Love Shop. I believe Naive has disbanded since then.
Wonderful album.

Well, after seeing 1990 and other of their albums for mid- (and lower)
prices at the local shops I gather they aren't that hard to come by after
all. Maybe I'll do a bit of blind shopping ;)

Cool. I didn't know that. Is there any way you could send me a song from

Great! I wish our used cd stores had lots of Danish albums, I'd have fun!!
I'll be the girl who goes cd CrAzY when I go to Denmark just like I did when
I went to Germany last summer. I think I spent $200 on cd's and I have never
done that in my life before. :) Then I had a slight problem when packing my
suitcase hehe. So did you buy them all by now? How much were they in
American dollars?

Mostly so. Haven't heard them all yet. When it comes to discovering new
music I have the attention span of a butterfly on cocaine because of
outside influences and new discoveries.
Loved National and Go! at first listen. The rest needs to be more intensely
studied.

Yes.

Around 550-600 kr IIRC.

I'm on my way out of the door, haven't got the exchange rate handy, so I'll
let you do the math.

Around $82-87 for seven albums. Seems pretty okay to me.

Sorry! I was asking more about how much they each cost, that's why I saw
that price and thought something was wrong. :) But that's a pretty normal
price then. :)

I bought National and Anti at fullprice, 150 kr. each. (I seem to recall I
later noticed "Anti" at 100 kr. somewhere else.)
Three others ("Go!", "Danmark", "Det Løse Live") cost 70 kr. each and the
last two 40 kr.
I think.

Prøv f.eks at tænde for flimmerkassen næste gang at TV3 viser
Heksene Fra Warren Manor, hvilken titel melodi banker ud af
højtaleren ? Endu en opgraderet version af The Smith´s gamle klassiker
How Soon s Now.

at stride imod Geneve-konvektionen?
