Billigt 3D program
Fra : Søren

Dato : 22-08-02 20:07

Hej

mvh.

salgstal.

Solidworks Coorporations's forsvar vedr. ovennævnte shootout, virkede lidt uheldig.

If the operator was indeed the biggest factor in the loss, why did SolidWorks not send its best

SolidWorks reseller, who told us he had been told he could not attend. We phoned every
SolidWorks consultant we could find in the [San Francisco] Bay Area and invited them to
participate, some attended as audience members, but Kym Dobson was the only one brave enough to
accept the challenge and he deserves a lot of credit for his courage and integrity."

Frandsen
endelig har fået øjnene op for
værdien at sit eget program.......

Adesk forhandlere?: Lars Sandberg har tit deltaget i denne gruppe, men altid
sober og faglig.

Hr. Anders,

deltager:

----The inside story----

Let's shed a little light on this "Shoot-Out"

"... The gunslinger for SolidWorks was Kym Dobson, a SolidWorks user and
engineering manager. Kym has been using SolidWorks since 1995 and has
trained his engineering department on SolidWorks. He is currently
unemployed and looking to start his own consulting practice..."

Kym has been an Engineering Manager for the last 2+ years. He hasn't
even seen any of the new features in 2001+

"...Each gunslinger had a laptop. Kevin was on a Dell laptop, with 1.2
Ghz CPU, 512 Mb RAM and an Nvidia graphics card with 32 MB RAM. Kym was
on a Toshiba Satellite laptop, with 1.2 Ghz CPU, 512 Mb, and an on-board
graphics chipset..."

Kevin's laptop was his work machine with 32MB Video (Quadro2Go)
Kym used Elise's laptop with 8MB (Intel)

Kevin's laptop was loaded with Inventor R5.3
Kym's - SolidWorks 2001+, non-registered, non-Office, no add-ins, Not
even Toolbox.

"...There were approximately 100 people in the audience. About ten of
them were Autodesk employees. About six were SolidWorks users who had
come to see the shoot-out..."

The REAL number was about 50 people - TOTAL.

"...Both gunslingers went into the contest "blind" without seeing the
files they were going to work on..."

This appeared to be TRUE. Either that or Kevin is a really good actor!

Round 1: Translating an AutoCAD 2D file to 3D geometry
Kevin: Being a CAD jockey he highlighted Inventor's strengths and was
smooth.

Kym: Struggled with this. He didn't use any of the new 2D-to-3D
features. Even so he managed to complete the part.

Round 2: Creating an in-place component using reference geometry
Kym: His lack of knowledge of SolidWorks and Top-Down design showed
through.

Kevin: Again smooth. Essentially giving a product demonstration as he
explained everything he was doing.

Round 3: Translate IGES
Kevin: Inventor can import an IGES file?! No wonder the participants
were amazed!

Kym: SW was able to import the IGES. But the solid had an error (red
exclamation point). Kym had the ability to add features but did not
know about or show SW complete capabilities.

At this point I began to get suspicious about the data and whther this
was truly a BLIND challenge.

Round 4: Assembly & Fasteners

Kym: His lack of expertise showed through. He used DISTANCE mates with
value of 0 for all the coincident mates and did not use ANY smart mates.
Kym could not add the required fasteners because TOOLBOX was not loaded!

Kevin: Same as always...smooth. Not even breaking a sweat.

Elise makes a comment at this point about how SW does NOT have any
fasteners and you have to BUY an ADD-ON. She is quickly corrected by
one of the SW users in the audience that it is included in SW-Office.
She acts surprised.

Round 5: Creating an exploded view and animating
At this point, Elise informed the guys that the last two rounds will be
limited to 5 minutes each due to time constraints.

Kevin: He attempts to explain why its good to have a separate file for
exploded views. And polished off an exploded view and an animation in
no time.

Kym: Used AUTOEXPLODE and could not figure out/remember how to add
manual explode steps and/or explode lines. Kym could make an animation
because Animator was not installed.

Again, it was stated that it was EXTRA but confirm by the same user that
it is included in SW Office.

Round 6: Engineering Change Order - Change the packaging.
Kym: It was apparent that Kym was not prepared for this one. He
started redrawing the part from scratch.

Kevin: no comment needed.

"...The judge was Betty Baugh, President of the Industrial Design
Society of America..."

What the heck is this organization?

"...She felt that Inventor had the better user interface and awarded
Inventor the top gun trophy. Her score was Inventor 91, SolidWorks
80..."

Not too bad for such a crappy showing....
I think Betty was trying to be PC about it...

That's the inside story....Draw your own conclusions....

Jess

Prøv at kigge
www.cadalog.com eller www.turbocad.com

Hej Bent
